My Pitch on TWiST

Posted in Accounting by Erin Lawlor on the October 23rd, 2009

Friday afternoons if you are able to, carve out an hour or two for Jason Calacanis at This week in Startups (TWiST).   It is a great show for Startups and Jason is inspirational and always has great guests.  Today his guest was Gary Vaynerchuk - an absolutely unbelievable entrepreneur and mentor, check him out.

The show has a “Shark Tank” segment and I was lucky enough today to be part of that segment.  I am not sure how I did but I will find out when I listen to the iTunes podcast version of the show when they post it.  Thank you to Jason and his crew for the opportunity and the show which I love and never miss and thank you for the great advice and networking.

The pitch I made on TWiST and the reason I started listening is because of a product that I am working to bring to market and I am learning how to do it.  The product is an accounting software system that - among other great things can prevent fraud.  I started designing it as a fix for other reasons and for my own use but then in 2004 I read a report that estimated losses of $600 billion a year to accounting fraud - everyone pays for that - it all gets passed to the consumer and taxpayer and that upsets me.  I think accounting systems should be able to prevent that and I don’t think any of them do and that upsets me - so I set out to fix it.  I now know how to fix it and I am doing something about it.

I have spent several years working on the design of my system and this site is one side effect of my work.  In the course of my research I had to take the accounting system apart and turn it upside down and then put it back together.  The knowledge I have gained from that process is what I have tried to pass on to you on this site.  ** The information on this site is strictly about the double entry accounting system, it does not describe my changes to accounting software.

The next thing for me really - is changing the world for the better with my system which does this now - it dramatically reduces the cost of information and makes that information really meaningful, saves incredible amounts of time and helps people to safeguard their resources in a way that they cannot do now.

In the meantime, I will keep you posted on my progress.
